Why we chose the name Papinian

Aemilius Papinianus, c. 142 – 212 AD

Palmyra, Syria — the Roman East, where Papinian's story begins

Aemilius Papinianus was a Roman jurist of Syrian origin, born around 142 AD. He served as Praetorian Prefect under Emperor Septimius Severus and became one of the most respected legal authorities of his time. According to ancient accounts, after Emperor Caracalla killed his brother Geta, he ordered Papinian to provide a legal justification. Papinian refused to use his knowledge and position to defend the killing. He was executed in 212 AD.

Papinian was founded by people with Syrian roots, and the name was chosen for a clear reason. Papinian's refusal represents integrity, courage and responsibility. He would not change what was right simply because a powerful person demanded it.

That story connects directly with our work. We believe that every person has equal dignity and should be able to participate in community life regardless of nationality, age, language or social background. People should not have to prove that they deserve inclusion. This principle is expressed in our statement: 'Inclusion needs no justification.'

The name also sets a standard for how we work. We aim to listen to people whose voices are often overlooked, remove barriers to participation and create activities where people are treated with fairness and respect.

Who we are

Rooted in Vejle. Working across Europe.

Papinian is based in Vejle, Denmark. We work locally and internationally with young people, youth workers, adults and communities from different cultural and social backgrounds.

Our organisation has practical experience as an organiser of Erasmus+ mobility projects and as a partner in European cooperation. We have successfully delivered an Erasmus+ Youth Exchange for young people and a KA153 Training Course for youth workers. This gives us direct experience with different target groups, learning needs and project formats.

We work in Arabic, Danish, English and Spanish. This multilingual capacity helps us communicate directly with the communities and international partners involved in our work.
